Salty Seagull - A Tale of an Old Salt is a children's nature book written by Suzanne Tate and illustrated by local artist James Melvin. The story follows Salty Seagull, a wise, elderly bird living on Little Island with a large flock. While some younger, "sassy" gulls initially mock or ignore his advice, Salty’s experience proves vital for the flock’s survival through several challenges: During a massive storm, Salty accurately predicts the arrival of the "eye" and warns the birds to stay hunkered down when the winds temporarily cease, preventing them from being swept away when the storm resumes. When food becomes hard to find, Salty demonstrates how to drop clams from high above to break their shells on hard surfaces. The central message teaches children the value of listening to the wisdom of those with more experience. Part of Suzanne Tate's nature series, the book combines a factual narrative with colorful illustrations.
