Great Sharky Shark - A Tale of a Big Hunter is a children's nature book written by Suzanne Tate and illustrated by local artist James Melvin. The book follows a young great white shark named Sharky and his sister as they hunt for fish. The narrative serves as an environmental lesson from ignoring his sister's warnings, Sharky hunts near a trash site and gets a plastic ring stuck around his head. The ring becomes a heavy "collar" covered in barnacles, nearly leading to Sharky's demise when it snags on a shipwreck just as a larger tiger shark approaches to hunt him. Sharky narrowly escapes when the collar finally pulls off, leaving him with a newfound respect for the dangers of human trash in the ocean. Part of Suzanne Tate's nature series, the book combines a factual narrative with colorful illustrations. Teaches fascinating marine life facts through a simplified, accessible narrative for lower elementary students.
